Day 17: Build a Portfolio That Sells While You Sleep - Asambe!
Good morning, team!
Let's talk about that magic moment.
A recruiter is interested, a potential client is curious, and they ask the six most important words: "Can I see some of your work?"
After today, you’ll answer with a confident "yes" and a link to your own professional portfolio website.
You’ve got a powerful CV and polished profiles on LinkedIn and freelance platforms.
Now, it’s time to build your digital home, your personal corner of the internet where you control the story.
A portfolio site works like your 24/7 salesperson.
It’s the ultimate proof of your skills and the final piece that turns you into an undeniable professional candidate.
Building a Portfolio: Your Step-by-Step Guide
Building a website might sound intimidating, but with today’s tools, you can have a stunning one-page portfolio live in about an hour or two.
We know this is one part or area where most of our students feel helpless.
Don’t worry, no need to feel overwhelmed.
See below, we’ve outlined the types of support and assistance we provide post the challenge.
For now, just follow the steps to have a picture of what goes into the portfolio.
Step 1: The Hero Section (Your First Impression)
This is the very first thing visitors see.
It must be powerful.
Action: Add a professional photo of yourself, your full name, and a strong headline that says who you are and what you do. Use the one from your LinkedIn profile! (e.g., "Mpho Moloi: Social Media Manager & Content Creator").
Step 2: The About & Services Section (Your Story & Offer)
Briefly tell your professional story.
Use the bio you wrote on Day 9.
Action: List the services you offer with bullet points. (e.g., • Social Media Management • Copywriting • Virtual Assistance • Graphic Design).
Make it easy for people to know how to hire you.
Step 3: The Portfolio Section (The Star of the Show)
Show, don’t just tell.
Aim for at least 2-3 project examples.
Action: Use the task you delivered on Day 15 as your first "case study."
For each project, write a small summary like this:
The Challenge: Briefly describe the problem or goal. (e.g., "A local community centre needed a poster to increase attendance for their winter event.")
The Solution: Explain what you did. (e.g., "I designed a vibrant, easy-to-read A5 poster using Canva, focusing on clear communication of the date, time, and location.")
The Result: Show the final product (add a screenshot!) and, if possible, a testimonial. (e.g., "The event saw a 20% increase in attendance, and the organisers loved the design.")
Step 4: The Contact Section (Your Call to Action)
Make it super easy for people to reach you.
Action: Include a link to your LinkedIn profile and your professional email.
You can also add a simple "Get in Touch" button that links to your email.
"But I Don't Have Enough Work to Show!" – Yes, You Do.
Here’s a myth that holds many back.
If you don’t have paid client work, create it yourself.
This concept work is just as valuable for showing your skills.
Clients don’t care if you got paid for the work; they care if you can do the work.
Redesign a logo for a local business you love.
Write better website copy for a non-profit.
Create a 3-post social media campaign for an imaginary brand you’ve invented.
These passion projects show your skill, creativity, and most importantly, your ambition.
A portfolio with three strong concept projects beats no portfolio every time.
Today, you build the asset that makes you look like the professional you are.
Let’s get it live.
