Welcome to the hustle from home era, where your bedroom is the boardroom and your WiFi is your income enabler.
Working remotely in Mzansi or anywhere in Africa is not just a trend; it is the new way to earn, learn and level up.
But let’s be honest, how will you make CEO moves when you are working from a couch that gobbles up your wallet and socks?
Today’s issue is your quick, cheeky cheat code to setting up a functional, affordable home office even when you are working from a backroom, flat or rural homestead.
Claiming Your Winning Space
You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect setup or an interior designer (for now).
What you do need is structure, focus and gear that is tailored to you.
1. Find your perfect workspaceStart with
Start with a designated workspace, even if it is a small table and a chair.
Make sure there is good lighting (natural light wins) and invest in a good chair.
Most importantly, reliable internet is a must.
If you are in a loud area, add noise-cancelling earphones.
If you are pressed for space or on a tight budget, search online for second-hand deals ( I bought my chairs from a second-hand office furniture shop mo kasi) or repurpose other home furniture.
2. Declutter and organise
An untidy desk leads to an untidy mind.
Spend some time decluttering and reorganising your workspace.
3. Embrace Technology
If we're being honest, from now on, technology should be one of your best friends when working remotely.
This means getting yourself an efficient laptop alongside a good internet connection and any other tools you.
Regardless of the kind of device you have, don’t forget to set up a dedicated workspace email account for professional and personal emails.
Balancing productivity and personal tasks can be equally easy and difficult.
4. Make a timeline
Every remote employee’s worst nightmare is not being able to separate work from personal time.
In order to keep burnout at bay, add specific times for starting and finishing work, breaks and a closing time.
5. Make your workspace your own
Incorporate some creative expression by adding plants or family pictures to your workspace.
Custom work environments can increase one’s attitude and imagination, which can help make those long hours a bit easier.
Go ahead and explore different approaches and see what works best for you.
Your home office is your own unique productivity laboratory, so feel free to modify and change things until you reach the arrangement that allows you to succeed.
Be purposeful.
Your home office is not only an office, it is your base for designing the life you want.
Be it pursuing online job opportunities, freelancing or doing self-employment, your attitude towards that space is very important.
Approach that workspace like it is a critical investment to your future, because it is.
Begin with small steps, but be persistent and make changes along the way.
Be intentional. Be purposeful.
Be relentless.
Your remote future is real, but only if you grab it.
Today is the day to be intentional about your future.
