The Programme That Started It All
Our flagship programme, titled Youth Generating Income through the Digital Economy, also serves as a driving force behind everything we publish and build.
What started in 2021 as Youth Development through Digital Content evolved in 2022 into a focused, income-first movement named Youth Generating Income through the Digital Economy.
Here we help young people learn how to turn daily online time into real, sustainable earnings.
This isn’t theory, it’s the result of working shoulder-to-shoulder with youth, communities, and institutions across South Africa for over two decades.
From Traditional Development to Digital Revolution
As the former City of Johannesburg Youth Unit Head, I’ve seen it all.
I have implemented a 25-floor Youth Programmes & Services One Stop Centre in Joburg CBD and partnered with the Rockefeller Foundation and Mentec Foundation to train over 500 youth on SAP Software.
I also established 10 Youth Advisory and Skills Centres across Johannesburg and implemented Learnership and NYS programmes benefiting thousands of young people.
But here’s the kicker: despite all these traditional programmes, youth unemployment kept rising, and the youth lack of digital skills and entrepreneurship know-how became a vivid reality.
The Digital Economy Revelation
Research showed that youth spend more than 7 hours daily online, mostly on social media and entertainment.
That’s when it hit me: what if we redirected that time toward wealth creation instead of just consumption?
This idea gave birth to our flagship programme: "Youth Generating Income through the Digital Economy."
It’s not just another youth programme; it’s a fundamental shift in how we empower young people.
Everything Vonage does in the digital space grows out of this flagship programme.
